William channels ee cummings

00014
We’ve had a lot of rain this week, all remnants of that hurrican that was threatening Florida earlier. I came home from work the other day to the above scene: The kids stomping and splashing in the mud puddles that covered our front yard. I immediately though of the lines:

In just
spring
when the world is mud luscious and puddle wonderful.

My old classic lit prof. would have been so proud of me for remembering. In fact, I’m a little surprised myself.

Anyway, they were soaked in mud, head to toe, and I was so happy to see it. Isn’t this just how kids are supposed to play? Covered in dirt and sopping wet? Unbridled fun and all that. Pretty cool.

The Daddy Daze Teacher Challenge

Dc
I’m a former teacher. I spent ten years working as a special needs teacher in both private and public settings. My wife continues to work as a special needs teacher in a local public school (she’s been at it for maybe 12 or 13 years). My dad is a teacher, as was my mother in law. If there’s anything I know about the profession, it’s that many of these hard working professionals simply don’t have the resources to get the job done. When I was teaching my integrated preschool, I had $300 in TOTAL for classroom supplies. I could have spent that on paper and paint alone, but I had to make it stretch to cover everything across all students for the whole school year. The worst part: This type of thing is the rule more often than the exception. Now, we all can help.

I’ve created a Daddy Daze accout at DonorsChoose. It’s a service that helps unite teachers and the things they need. Here’s how it works: A teacher writes a proposal requesting what they need, describing their situation and exactly how much money they require to get what they’re after. Helpful folks like you and me donate to the cause, and these teachers can get what they need! Cool, eh? You can help by clicking the thermometer link in my sidebar to the right.

Look at some of the proposals I’ve found: This Special Needs teacher needs $300 to buy a locking file cabinet for his students’ confidential files. I mean, come on! He just needs a filing cabinet! This art teacher has been given $600 to spend across 600 students. That’s $1 per student! Ridiculous.

We can help. Join me in funding these programs. These teachers (and our kids!) deserve it.

Soup and a sandwich

Soupandsandwich

Soup and a sandwich, it’s the classic kid’s meal, right? Check out this cool plate and bowl from Uncommon Goods. There’s a separate compartment for the sandwich and the (included) bowl. I like it. $15US.

Let’s talk about music

Rockabyeradiohead_1
Recently, Mr. Mom (I actually know him in person) and I were talking about the music our little ones listen to. As a former musician, I listen to music all of the time, and the kids have a mountain of play instruments to bang on. They listen to music of their own as well, and they’re especially fond of No! and Here Come the ABC’s by They Might Be Giants.

Of course, when we’re in the car, I sometimes want to listen to my own music (No! is great and all, but I have limits). Mr. Mom was telling me about all of the contemporary music that his kids dig, and I guess Grace and William have their current favorites as well (Hey Ya! by Outkast was a big hit, as is Crazy by Gnarls Barkley). Still, I’d like to preserve the innocence of childhood as much as I can (that means no Jay-Z, kids), but I can’t tolerate kids’ music 24-7.

That’s why I was pretty excited to find Baby Rock Records. They offer albums by contemporary bands arranged for a kid’s ear. Check out the kid-ified versions of Radiohead, Coldplay, Metallica, Tool and many more. Ordinarily, Radiohead is  "ending-it-all-in-the-truck-with-a-shotgun" music, but the Baby Rock version totally is acceptable for the little ones.

Of course, none of this matters if the kids hate it. I’m going to pick one up and see what happens. Perhaps Houses of the Holy?

it’s Friday

You know the drill by now. Find my new post at The Parenting Post here. This time, Grace and I see a play (and I sweat and swear).

On a related note, the blog is mentioned in the September issue of Parenting. Cool!

The new TV season

Amy
It seems that the new kids’ television season has begun. Sesame Street has been featuring a brief introduction by Grover, Elmo and Zöe each morning. They describe a bit of what’s going to happen each day, which is kind of nice, I guess. I still haven’t seen the new character that’s going to debut this season, but Amy Sedaris played Snow White this morning! I thought it was very cool to see Amy (she really got into the whole thing, which was great. A lot of celebrities just phone it in), though her her appearance was kind of lost on Grace and William.

In related news, Arthur has gone CGI! I don’t know when (or why) this happened, but the kids were unimpressed. Blue supposedly has a brother scheduled to appear this season, but we don’t watch Blues Clues.

I just looked over at William as I’m typing this, and noticed that he’s been holding his sippy cup upside down for the last few minutes, pouring his apple juice/water blend all over his tray. Gotta run.

Ready, set, go (and follow-through)!

Of the sixty photos I took of her playing with bubbles (I took sixty photos because I really don’t know what I’m doing), these were the best.
